Retail Projects and Design Work
For more than a decade, I owned a company that made organic, ecofriendly skin and body care products. The name of the company was skinnyskinny, a name made up of skin + NY and then merely doubled because the domain name skinny.com was taken. Initially, the business was solely ecommerce, with wholesale accounts in nearly a hundred stores such as Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Credo. The skinnyskinny product line was sold internationally, as well, including in Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong. I formulated every product and all of the products were manufactured in skinnyskinny's workshop. The product range included soaps, body oils, lip balms, dry shampoo, and candles. The product line, including the packaging, won numerous awards and was consistently highly-rated among customers.
In addition to ecommerce, skinnyskinny existed as a brick-and-mortar store in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. I designed and built the store, focusing on found and reclaimed materials. The brick-and-mortar store was immensely popular and was featured in several commercials.
Owning a business taught me much about interacting directly with customers rather than having a middleperson, such as a curator or gallery owner, speak on my behalf. I have always taken an exceedingly broad approach to art-making and considered owning a business to be simply another medium in which I could work. Eventually, I decided to close the business and move on to other projects.
